Beyonce's Dieting Secrets: “The Sasha Fierce Salad”

Beyonce is the female, you try to hate on but you can’t really find any fault in her but you still hate anyway. But love or hate her, Beyonce is on top and in the June issue of Self Magazine, she reveals her dieting secrets that helps her stay Sasha Fierce.

Sasha Fierce’s Meal Plan:

Breakfast: A granola or Special K cereal.

Snack: Sliced fruit or tomatoes and cucumbers with a vinaigrette and cayenne pepper.

Lunch: “The Sasha Fierce Salad” Lettuce, tomato, avocado, jalapenos, and chicken breast with oil and vinegar. Followed by a 100-calorie snack like Oreos or crackers.

Dinner: Fish and green vegetables.

Late night snack: A Soy Dream “ice cream” sandwich.

So, this is how B stays in shape. It’s a very strict diet but she continues in the magazine saying that once a week she treats herself to a comfort food meal like pizza and a glass of red wine.

Trust, I’m going to start making “The Sasha Firece Salad."

Fly Things: Peep ‘Em

Here is a list of a few of my new favorite things, which I just have to share with my readers. Enjoy!

Generation X

The new hope of Hip-Hop some of calling this collection of young rappers. Drake, Picasso P, Asher Roth, KiD CuDi, and Cory Gunz, are proving that Hip-Hop may not be dead. Generation X is for those who can’t stand Soulja Boy and feel that Jay-Z is getting a little too old for the rap game. If you’re in your young, fly twenties, these are the rapper for you. Google them and get familiar. And no, I’m not jumping on the bandwagon, I was feelin’ Drake since his 2007’s ‘Replacement Girl’ track featuring Trey Songz.

Check out this new video, from Asher Roth, ‘Lark In My Go-Kart.’

Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish

Do you know how many harmful ingredients are in your nail polish? Your favorite nail polish is filled with formaldehyde, toluene and DBP, they are not only proven to be dangerous, but also potentially damaging to the nail as well. Dr.'s Remedy’s nail polish is free from the aforementioned chemicals, but also uniquely enriched with ingredients, such as tea tree oil and garlic bulb extract, which are naturally occurring anti-fungal, antibacterial, and healthier for the nail. Not only is Dr.'s Remedy better for you, it comes in a rainbow of today's most fashionable colors.

Policy DC

This new restaurant is sexy! Located just around the corner from the historic U Street Corridor. Policy is taking center stage in Duke Ellington's old neighborhood and emerging as one of the most highly anticipated restaurants to hit D.C's hottest and most vibrant neighborhood. I just got invited to their soft opening tonight and I’m too excited. It officially opens on Saturday and it is shaping up to give other U Street restaurants a run for their money. Click here to learn more and make a reservation for their opening weekend.

Twitter
I was hip to Twitter since last August and now that all my friends and celebrities have joined the new social network its hella fun. Everyone always ask me, “What’s the big deal about Twitter?” It’s hard to explain, but I think it’s like Facebook without all the extra applications and changes. It also makes you appreciate the small things in life, it kinda makes you stop and smell the roses of your life and fill your friends in on what your doing for the day. Plus, I get to learn more about my favorite celebs.

For example, Solange is a riot on Twitter. She puts everything out there and I’m learning more about the Knowles clan.

Diddy, is hilarious. He has over 200,000 followers, which is breaking records on Twitter. He even started his own network called, P-Twitty TV on youtube.com, he is a fool, and you have to watch him work in the studio into the wee hours of the morning.

June Ambrose, my favorite fashion guru, gives out style tips without having to pay for them. I love reading her updates on what styles are hot for the spring.

Goodbye Vince Chase, See you in season 6!

One of my favorite shows, "Entourage" ended its fifth season yesterday and I’m singing the blues. What am I going to do until season six besides dwindling my thumbs in anticipation?

If you’re a fan of “Entourage” as I am, check out the last episode below and then read this article I found in The Washington Post by Robin Givhan showcasing the difference that money can make by outlining the boy bonding on “Entourage” and the girlie cat fights on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Click here to read.

Woof! Hottie from Flavor of Love 2 Spotted!

Hottie from Flavor of Love 2 attended Howard University’s homecoming YardFest last Friday. The only reason I’m featuring her is to serve as an example of what is NOT fly. Come on Hottie, you know you can get a better weave and blonde just isn't your color. The hair, the makeup, the outfit, everything is just all-wrong.

WOOF!

Fly Quote- Spike Lee on Obama

How true is this quote? I knew I loved Spike Lee for a reason.

“You’ll have to measure time by ‘Before Obama’ and ‘After Obama.’ It’s an exciting time to be alive now.”- Spike Lee

I love Vince Chase! Entourage is back!

I was hurt that I missed the season premiere of Entourage. I mean not only did the delayed season mess up my whole summer, since I had to wait, I thought for sure I would be glued to the television screen. Nevertheless, I missed the show, but Tim Livingston of 411mania.com does a great job recapping the first episode.

The Other Entourage Review: Season 5, Episode 1 - Fantasy Island

Posted by Tim Livingston on 09.08.2008

This is the type of show that always seems to come through with a good season premiere. Yeah, this one delivers on many cylinders.

The show begins with Roeper at the Movies, where he absolutely blasts the movie as a disaster. Not surprisingly, it’s getting around that the movie wasn’t good, and after the now infamous “Hindenberg” showing at Caanes, it has been relegated to straight-to-DVD release. Ouch. Of course, Eric is watching this and taking it all in stride, beer in hand. Meanwhile, here comes Johnny, MacBook in hand (hooray product placement) and he’s talking via webcam with Jacqueline, the French woman he met at Caanes who absolutely loved Viking Quest. For a great visual, go back to the end of Season 4 when she asks him to do scenes from the show. Classic Johnny Drama stuff. Anyways, Drama tries to cheer E up, but E isn’t hearing it. He’ll just sit and drink his beer, hoping that Vince is okay at his hideaway in Mexico.

Of course, since this is Entourage, it goes straight to Vince, of course, having sex with a beautiful woman on a secluded Mexican beach. Meanwhile, a second woman comes in, much to the chagrin of Turtle, who’s along for the ride, of course, as he and his girl have to go to the hammock instead. Well, you can only do so much.

Meanwhile, Ari returns to the office on Monday morning after the Roeper ripping. Of course, suck-ups galore try to cheer him up, but this is ARI GOLD, for crying out loud. It leads to the first of what will be many Ari tirades. He’s already in midseason form. Meanwhile, Carl Ertz calls with an idea about casting Vince in a new movie called “Beach Danger.” As it would be repeated throughout the episode, “It’s a working title.” Intrigued that Vince would receive an offer upon a meeting, Ari gets in motion to get Vince back to LA before Ertz leaves for Greece on Wednesday.

Now, we go to E’s office, where he has someone resembling your normal great aunt answering calls, and E is in talks with Charlie, played by Bow Wow, about getting him some roles in a couple of start-ups. After E finally lets Ari on the line, they talk to each other as only they can, finally agreeing that they need to get Vince back for this role.

At a photo shoot for Drama’s TV show, he’s on a roll until he gets asked to shoot from his right side, which, in his words, makes him look like a monster. This causes a stir-up with the photographer and the director, who then threatens to call the producer. Of course, Drama thinks he’s bigger than he is. That’s one bluff that will get called.

E then talks to Vince about coming back, but Vince ain’t having any of it. You know, because it’s a beach, there’s food, and there’s threesomes. Seriously, would YOU want to leave that? After that pow wow, E and Ari talk and realize that they need to take matters into his own hands. Meanwhile, Charlie can’t find a thing in the town yet, as another interview goes badly. The one hand that E does have under control at the moment isn’t getting him anywhere.

In his trailer, Johnny still doesn’t like his right side and complains to his girlfriend. Ben Silverman is on his way, powerwalking his way towards the trailer when he gets a call from E asking exactly where Vince is. When he finds out that it’s an emergency, he ditches on Silverman, the CHAIRMAN OF THE NETWORK. Well, if that isn’t a foreshadow…by the way. I would be in remiss if I didn’t mention how Drama and his girlfriend say good-bye to each other by using bird sounds. Adorable.

Winner for best part of the episode: The crew flies in to Vince‘s hideaway to “Return of the Mack.” A party is going on, with like, three guys and 20 girls. I’m going to the wrong parties. Complete with Turtle saying, “Boss! Theee plane! Theee plane!”, the crew lands and they all talk. They say that people kind of forgot about Vince. Drama: “Don’t take it personally, bro. The whole country’s on meth.” Vince comes back saying he doesn‘t want to go. “Even Turtle is getting laid.” Turtle: “A lot!” Vince puts his foot down, so E has to give his “pep talk.” Vince’s beard is lovely for someone who’s been on a beach for six months. Just sayin’. Vince agrees to go back, but not before Turtle gets one last lay in before they leave.

Cleanly shaven, Vince gets back after reading the script and enjoys what he read, title aside. Turtle thinks the movie should be called “High Tide.” The guys like it. Ari shows up to give Vince his report, and, as he sometimes does with Turtle, has a great little back and forth, complete with Turtle telling him what he does all the time when he’s waiting for these meetings to be done. That would be watching porn in the Escalade. With the windows down and the volume up. Classic Turtle. Guy gets laid more in a six month period than he ever has, and as soon as he hits LA, it’s right back to his horn dog ways.

As Vince walks in, Adam Davies spots him sitting down with Ertz. He goes over as Vince chats up the script and Turtle’s title idea, which Ertz likes. After saying hi to Ertz, Davies reveals to Ari that Vince was set up in return for a low ball offer on Emile Hirsch. So there goes that plan. By the way, saw him in Alpha Dog. Much better in The Girl Next Door. Ari chews up the script, Davies has the last word on Ari, and the guys reconvene to talk about getting Vince back in the game. So, of course, Turtle and Drama head to Ertz’s house, golf bag in hand. Drama then takes a six iron to the windshield of one of Ertz‘s cars, but not the Maserati. To top it off, Drama leaves a fish, “Godfather“ style and exclaims “Aquaman will be back!” to end the episode.

As a whole, it’s a great opener, because it basically sets things up for what makes Entourage great in the first place: the chase for glory. After an initial bump in the road, the crew will have their initiative tested right away and they will need to bounce back big-time. Be sure to watch for how Ari and E go this season. If E is trying to get Charlie’s career going, would he look at Ari as a competitor or mentor? How will this affect his standing with Vince? What will happen with Drama’s job? Will Turtle stop being funny? (probably not) Looking forward, there’s many different things that can happen, including Vince’s next shot at returning to glory, which seems to be the way they’re going at least in the near future.

The 411: Entourage has always been a show that started off strong. This one is no exception. For many, the question now stands as to whether or not the show can keep itself going strong. Take a shot on this season of Entourage. It was hurt by the Writer's Strike, and it looks like it wants to return itself to the glory it saw when it hit its peak in Season 3, Part 1. This is definitely a good start, but the only question remains whether or not this will keep on going.
Final Score: 8.5

Despite her short career, she sold 32 million records worldwide. In addition to her commercial success, her collaborations with Timbaland helped shape the sound of R&B in the latter half of the 1990s.She also modeled for Tommy Hilfiger and starred in two motion pictures before being killed.

R.I.P. Isaac Hayes

Damn, this has been a heartbreaking weekend for the Black community.

Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, died today, Sunday, August 10, 2008, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. He was 65.

A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death was not immediately known.

In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap.

Wow, first we lose a king of comedy and now a music icon has left us. Rest in peace, Mr. Isaac Hayes and Mr. Bernard Jeffrey McCullough.

R.I.P. Bernie Mac

The original king of comedy has passed this morning, Saturday, August 09, 2008. Comedian and actor Bernie Mac, who starred in one of U.S. TV's few black sitcoms and appeared in the "Ocean's 11" movies, died in Chicago on Saturday after a bout with pneumonia. He was 50.

Publicist Danica Smith confirmed the death in a statement but gave no further details. "We ask that his family's privacy continues to be respected," she said. His hospitalization was announced on August 1. At the time, his publicist said his illness was unrelated to a chronic tissue inflammation called sarcoidosis, which had been in remission since 2005.

The Chicago-born comedian, whose real name was Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, starred in "The Bernie Mac Show," which ran for five seasons until 2006 and lives on in syndication.

Disclaimer

At first, I wasn't going to write a disclaimer considering it's my blog, but I would like to clarify the purpose of The Fly Girl Guide. This blog to me is mixture of material, I like to read and advice that I give to others as well as myself. I've always been a writer and a magazine junkie so I'm trying to create, The Fly Girl Guide into an online magazine.
I will state that when I refer to my friend, it does not literally mean my friends from way back or any person that you think I might be talking about. When I refer to my friends in my writing, my friend maybe an associate or someone I ran into, yet if you feel my blog is talking about you, then maybe it is, or maybe there’s so many females that can relate to my articles that you think I'm talking about you. Stop being so vain! LOL
I do not claim to know everything, I really don't know much about anything, I'm still growing and learning everyday. But my friends always do come to me for advice, and they tell me I'm a good listener (don’t ask my boyfriend because he will tell you otherwise!) and I just may have some wise words.

Ultimately, as I grow and learn, I’m taking notes and writing everything down which has become my blog. Let me officially welcome you to the Fly Girl Guide.

Enjoy!

With Love,
Your fellow Fly Girl Carla

OK, that's an ad for wearing your seat belt, but I thought it was funny- is that bad? I mean even the flyest girl can land on her face while she's wearing Jimmy Choos! LOL Buckle Up! It's the law!

Get Right for Spring Break

Spring Break is coming up and I want you have to the best vacay as possible. Here are a few tips on how to travel like a true fly girl.

I’ll Fly Away:

I love traveling but I do hate flying, so when I do fly I try to pack things in my carry-on that makes me happy.

Get organized: Find a cute carry- on bag that you can stuff everything into yet will still fit in the overhead or under the seat. Group small items in Ziploc bags, I bring my favorite gum and little snacks in one, beauty products in the other, and so on. My favorite fly girl tip: pack into your carry-on what you want to wear during the day and night of your arrival. In case of lost luggage, you won’t be too pissed that you have nothing to wear, you’ll now have two options and you can always pick up accessories and make up at any local store that can hold you over until your luggage arrives.

Sitting Pretty: The recycled air of the plane can dry out our skin and sitting cramped with only peanuts and gum to eat, I have to carry a travel brush and toothpaste so I can brush my teeth and not feel as icky when my flight lands. Skip heavy makeup on flights, mascara and a touch of concealer should do the trick, drink lots of water and carry lip balm.

Be comfortable: Try to pack a shawl; it gets cold on the plane so use the shawl as a blanket. Never use airplane blankets, they are gross. Bring an extra shirt, in case you spill something.

Get Distracted: I hate flying so I have to pack tons of distraction. Fill up your Ipod with relaxing music and bring books and magazines. After my trip, I hand over my mags to the flight attendants; I figure they were nice to me during my flight so I’ll be nice to them.

___________________________________________________________

If You Wanna come to my Hotel:

Finding a hotel deal for your vacation is just as hard as shopping for the cheapest plane ticket. Though there are ways to increase your chances of scoring the perfect hotel for your trip and how to make the most of your hotel.

Talk direct: Before booking your hotel online, call the hotel directly. The hotel staff may have specials that the online site does not know about. Also, talking to someone makes you seem more personable than just using a mouse to book the hotel, if it’s your first time in the city, let the staff know and they just might upgrade your room.

Upon arrival: Every hotel has a section that promotes local shops, activities and things to do in the city. Use these to your advantage; I always pick up the local magazines to find the best places to eat according to reviews, the best places to pick up local jewelry and clothing. Talk to front desk, they are probably from the area and they love to talk to visitors, ask them about the nightlight and their favorite restaurants.

Free Food: If your hotel offers a continental breakfast, try it out. After a night of partying, take advantage of the orange juice and water to get re-hydrated. I also notice when I go on vacations, I don’t stick to diets and why should I? I’m on vacation, but the free breakfast often has fresh fruits so I pick up some oranges and apples and I feel much better.

Prior Departure: Try to talk to the hotel manager, let them know if you had a great experience with their hotel. If the staff was helpful, tell the manager. You’re goal is to build a relationship with manager so if you stay again, he or she might give you the hook up.

You should Tip Her:

A true fly girl knows to tip, when your on vacation the better you take care of others who provide you a service, the better they will take care of you and the better your stay will be.

Here’s how to tip like a true fly girl:

Note that you tip because they are providing you with a service that makes your life easier or more enjoyable. Secondly, be generous and discreet about how you tip, you’ll be remembered and welcomed back enthusiastically.

Cash Flow:

Step 1:First, understand your own financial situation, sure you want to be a good tipper and if someone provided you great service you’ll like to reward them but don’t break the bank if you can’t afford it.

Step 2: Figure out what kind of service it is you're receiving. Some services should receive percentage-based tips, while others are more of a flat cost (most of the time). A car washer, coat checker or furniture movers should require a flat rate. From $2-$5 for a car washer to $10-$50 per mover. Other people like hairstylists and waiters should receive 15 percent to 20 percent, sometimes more. Pizza delivery service is usually about 10 percent, but no less than $2.

Step 3:Use your best judgment. What's the real different between, say, 15 percent and 20 percent, when it means a matter of a dollar? Well, it says a lot to the person who you're tipping. The additional dollar (or one fewer) tells them how they're doing. You're essentially helping others' future experiences with that person. For things like babysitters, nannies or house cleaners, tip them at the end of each month at an amount you see fit. No more than one week's pay for a month of work, but the work they do is constant and not easy, so they do deserve a heftier tip. So, keep things like that in mind.

Step 4:Be discreet. Don't flaunt how much you're tipping someone at a restaurant by living the bill in plain view. If you're paying for a household service, placing the tip in an envelope is a good idea. Basically, you want to keep the tip transaction -- good or bad -- between you and the person receiving the tip.

No matter where your going for spring break, enjoy your trip and be safe!
